Simon of Sudbury

Simon of Sudbury
(d. 1381)
   Archbishop.
Simon was born in Sudbury, Suffolk. He was educated at the University of Paris and he was consecrated Bishop of London in 1361. Then in 1375 he became Archbishop of Canterbury. He took a prominent part in the political life of his time and in 1380 he was appointed Chancellor of England. The imposition of a poll tax inspired the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, led by Wat Tyler and John ball. Simon was captured by the mob and was summarily executed. In consequence, he was regarded as a martyr by his supporters.
